What are superfoods?

It seems that no matter where you go grocery shopping, you see the word ‘superfood’ everywhere. It’s up and down the grocery aisles, in beauty products and on every Instagram ad we scroll through. But what exactly are they? And what makes them so super?

A quick google definition search will tell you a superfood is “a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.” Okay awesome…but what does that really mean? To put it simply, superfoods are nutritional powerhouses. They are extremely high in micronutrients like vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants, enzymes and healthy fats. These are all nutrients that are essential to our body and help us thrive. Superfoods fuel our body so we can fight back against chronic diseases and nutrient deficiencies.

There is no specific marking a product needs to have to be considered a superfood. They aren’t marked with an “S” logo like Superman for example. The majority of superfoods are found in nature and grow from the soil:  fruits, vegetables, seeds, grasses, seaweed (or algaes) and leaves.
